If you are walking through the Arlington Entertainment District, you will notice a second large stadium sitting directly next to Globe Life Field. That is Choctaw Stadium, the former home of the Texas Rangers from 1994 to 2019. The two venues are separated by little more than a parking lot and part of the Texas Live! complex.
Here is the story behind it and what happens there now.
Choctaw Stadium opened in 1994 as The Ballpark in Arlington. It served as the Rangers’ home for 26 seasons under several names, including Ameriquest Field, Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and Globe Life Park in Arlington. The Rangers played their final game at the venue in 2019 before moving across the street to the new Globe Life Field, which opened in 2020.
The move was driven largely by the Texas heat. Choctaw Stadium was an open-air facility, which made summer games in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit uncomfortable for players and fans alike. Globe Life Field was built with a retractable roof and full air conditioning, solving the heat problem that had defined the fan experience at the old park.
After the Rangers moved out, Choctaw Stadium was remodeled in 2020. Part of the lower bowl was removed to accommodate a soccer and football field. The venue now hosts a mix of sports, entertainment and business tenants.
North Texas SC (MLS Next Pro) plays soccer matches at Choctaw Stadium. The Dallas Jackals (Major League Rugby) also call the venue home. High school and college football games are held throughout the fall season.
Beyond sports, the stadium has been repurposed with over 100,000 square feet of office space. The Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Six Flags Entertainment headquarters and Spark Coworking all operate from inside the building. The mix of active sports, office space and event hosting gives Choctaw Stadium a second life that few former Major League stadiums have achieved.
